Duration

from 6 to 10 days

Suitable for

Hikers in good health, capable of walking at least 6-7 hours a day, with an average elevation gain of +/- 1,200 m, on mountain trails with loose dirt and/or rocky surfaces, sometimes snow-covered depending on weather conditions. There are some sections equipped with fixed ropes, steps, or metal cables, requiring no special equipment. These sections require previous experience and a sure-footedness. They are not recommended for those with a fear of heights. The Alta Via 1 trekking program can be customized to your level upon request.

Best time

From mid-July to mid-September. From mid-June to mid-July, and from late August to mid September, it is still possible to find snow on the highest passes; therefore we recommend using lightweight crampons and trekking poles.

Tour type

Trekking tour with overnight stays in mountain huts or small hotels, organized on a self-guided basis or accompanied by a hiking guide. Required transportation is included with private vehicles, and luggage transport is available upon request for some stages.

The Alta Via Trail 1 in Aosta Valley, known as the Alta Via dei Giganti, or "The giants’ trail", is a trekking route through incomparable scenery, across the foothills of some of the highest peaks in Europe such as Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc.
A well-marked trail, suitable for everyone, that crosses the Gressoney valley, through Champoluc, Valtournanache, Valpelline, Gran San Bernando and Val Ferret to Courmayeur.
Follow the trails of Tor des Géants, one of the most attractive endurance trail race in the world crossing the Alps of Aosta Valley, maintaining an average altitude of around 2000m and often reaching almost 3000m
